Crater Studio Scholarship for 10 Future Compositing Artists

It&rsquo;s been a rollercoaster ride for which flexibility turned out to be indispensable. Petar Jovovich, VFX supervisor and Crater studio&rsquo;s founder, and Milovan Mladenovic, executive producer and partner, talked about how the work at Crater studio changed and adapted to the emergency state in Serbia and around the globe. Having in mind that most of the clients Crater studio works with currently come from China, India and USA, Petar and Milovan got an overview of the effects pandemic has had in different parts of the world so far. Currently, Crater studio operates both from home and from their office in Belgrade, abiding by the protection protocole and safety measures.

The fact that we had a project going on was particularly challenging. In the first month we didn&rsquo;t have any new projects on the horizon because I think that everyone needed some time to adjust and figure out what&rsquo;s going on, and what to do. Later on we started getting some new inquiries and we even took on new projects. However, communication with current clients was a bit slow during the first few weeks so the deadlines were also extended.

Remote programmes did cause certain issues but nothing that slowed us down. Working from home has been accepted fairly well, some of our team members even work better from home. It was really important that we set a working system and information flow so that we keep the team in the loop all the time.

Is there anything you think will significantly change due to pandemic?

Traditional shooting and set time is not really necessary in order to create new content. But the pause in production will have its consequences. Some of the international post-production companies are already experiencing the vacuum caused by lock-downs. Those that can will either shift to full CG content or wait for next projects, which inevitably leads to the fact that teams will get smaller or bigger depending on the workload. In simple words, it&rsquo;s really necessary to be flexible right now or at least first in line to get the next project.

Some of the biggest studios has already started doing this - they are pulling out animation projects they had laying around. On the other hand, everything that&rsquo;s been put on hold will resume as soon as the conditions allow and the pandemic dials down. We&rsquo;re keeping in touch with our clients we would&rsquo;ve already been working with if it hadn&rsquo;t been for Covid-19 and the good news is that they already are planning to restart projects that were put on hold due the pandemic.

We managed to supervise everyone&rsquo;s work and individual efficiency due to the fact that this whole situation was new to everyone and also we didn&rsquo;t know what to expect. In a way, I think that this imposed work from home has brought a better organization and efficiency of the team.

There&rsquo;s also been a lot of talk about Cloud and that really has been a solution for some time now, for certain parts of the process such as rendering. When it comes to VFX, I think that Cloud is still far fetched due to extensive information flow and file size.

Our starry eyes and the unmistakable sweet taste of making the impossible possible.

I beam with pride. Each a tiny universe and mirror of its owner, these desks are nodes in a creative web capable of going unspeakable lengths and achieving incredible results. It&rsquo;s intoxicating.
<span style="font-size: 15pt; font-family: Roboto,sans-serif; color: #3c3c3c; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">It&rsquo;s also funny, because we didn&rsquo;t really have an idea where we&rsquo;re going to end up when we started this journey. Sure, we knew we were in for a wild ride &ndash; long one even &ndash; but the exact destination was pretty foggy to us.

The only way to see what was in front was to go forward, so we did.

<h2>About The Film</h2>
Based on London author John Kelly&rsquo;s beloved children&rsquo;s book, &ldquo;The Pig on the Hill&rdquo; is heart-warming story about next door neighbors who are worlds apart. Living in the whimsical mountaintop community of Topton, Pig very much enjoys his solitude and silence. In every direction, an expansive, gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains and waterways, with no neighbors as far as the eye can see. One day, however, Duck shows up and zealous about the amazing location, he decides to build a home right next door, causing an awful ruckus as he installs a water slide, swimming pool, palm trees, and outdoor sound system. Pig tries to ignore the disruption to his sanctuary, wearing noise-canceling headphones and busying himself with his daily routine. But Duck&rsquo;s ebullient presence has forever upset the rhythms of Pig&rsquo;s organized life.

Crater Studio and Lightstream Animation Studios (LSA) have been partners and collaborators on many VFX, film and animation projects since 2010. It was a great honor to have Mr. Pierce Brosnan as the narrator and a promoter and supporter of the whole project.

We spent almost three years in the making of this little gem. We were coming back to it every time we were free from the ongoing commercial projects. That had its own benefits, as we had some extra time to rethink some of the details. In general pipeline worked well. John and Jamy from LSA were taking care of animation scenes and were fantastic visual consultants. All look development, lighting, compositing and some animation took place in Crater Studio with all creative freedom given. We used Maya &ndash; Houdini &ndash; Nuke pipeline. Textures were produced in Mudbox. We rendered all shots in Arnold, and composited in Nuke. The aim was to have the best possible beauty renders, so the minimal touches are done in compositing. In order to achieve that artists in Crater Studio spent a considerable amount of time in light &amp; ldev stages of the process. Compositing served to unveil Crater Studio&rsquo;s artists&rsquo; hard work in full color &amp; glory.

Animago award for best short film goes to The Pig on the Hill

Collecting references is certainly an important part of our job and it can be very interesting, at least it was to our internship team. 
In order to make more realistic 3D models of airplanes that they are making during the internship, our mentors took them to a trip to the Museum of Aeronautics in Belgrade, so they could collect necessary material. It was very practical, educational and fun for all!

Like previous years, one more time we are organizing an internship for our best students in Crater Studio, to help them master skills and gain experience in a real production environment.
Several foreign students from <a href="https://www.pearsoncollegelondon.ac.uk/escape-studios.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Escape Studios</a>, London UK, have joined this year's internship as well. They will work together on project ''Drava'' mentored by Crater's artists. We wish them all a lot of success!

Ten students have won REEL REVIEW &amp; FEEDBACK SESSION in various VFX studios as part of <a href="https://cgabelgrade.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CGA Belgrade</a> conference on November 28th.
Elena Madelaine Mathias and Aleksandar Paskas came to Crater Studio.
They found out about the necessary qualifications for internship at Crater and how to improve their work, as a first step to a successful career from Crater's lead artists, Bogdan and Maksim.

Interesting coincidence - two projects that we have been working on the visual effects are in the program of Sundance festival 2019.

The horror movie "Sweetheart" that will be premiered at the festival will compete within the Midnight category. Sweetheart is the story about Jenn, who found herself on a desert island and the cruel nature is not her only enemy, but also evil, dark forces that operate during the night.
&nbsp;
"The Witch hunters" movie, which delighted the audience in Serbia, will be presented in the category - Children's film. The main characters, Jovan and Milica, will lead you to the incredible world of imagination and superheros, in this inspiring debut of Ra&scaron;ko Miljković.

The CG scene in Serbia is becoming more noticable and thanks to the CGA Belgrade Conference, we can share the skills and achievements of the entire industry to the people in Serbia, as well as to present Serbia at the international level as a location for creative industries.

Crater Studio work on American blockbusters and Bollywood hits!

<a href="https://www.animationmagazine.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Animation Magazine</a> published the list of short animation films, including The Pig on the Hill, co-production of partner studios - <a href="http://lightstreamanimation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lightstream Animation Studios </a>(USA) and Crater Studio (SER), qualified for the nomination for the 91st The <a href="https://oscar.go.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Academy Award</a> 2019.

"Thugs Of Hindostan" is a Bollywood blockbuster, produced by YRF - Yash Raj Films, which premiere is announced for the end of the year. Crater Studio's VFX artists work on the segments of this movie: CG sea rocks, water simulations and destruction of ships in the ambush scene.
