CRATER GOES TO MARVEL

How we managed to pull it off

 

 

It was late 2021 when we were invited by Cinesite to produce visual effects for a Marvel Studios and Disney TV series set to premiere in late March of 2022 on Disney+. Saying yes to the mighty Moon Knight was a no-brainer, but to actually pull it off was the result of hard work, team effort, and a genuine passion for our craft.

 

An initial one-episode award soon doubled, along with Cinesite’s confidence in our work.  In a short period, we assembled complex data from Weta FX, around 50 assets and over 300 sources of light, preparing multiple Chamber of the Gods shots ready for rendering.  

 


Our team also adapted this pivotal Chamber environment asset, which features extensively, in all its glory, throughout the episode - both in its original and partially demolished state, delivering camera match-moving, compositing and renders. 

 

 

 

 

However, it was episode 6 where our most complex visual effects took place.  We worked with frames originally designed by other teams using their own proprietary tools, including Framestore and Weta FX, which was challenging since our FX needed to have absolute continuity with theirs. Nevertheless, we jumped into this project believing in the strength of our team, and artists from our Compositing Department proved their expertise by creating templates to speed up the processes, thereby helping to ensure the high quality of every frame.

 

 

Most importantly, we had the fantastic opportunity to work on some glorious FX, particularly those demonstrating Stephen Grant's magic transformation from regular guy to superhero, complete with his distinctive, flowing cape.

 

 

Out of the 80 shots we initially signed up for, around 50 made it to the final cut. 

 

 

 

 

The work we did for Moon Knight was complex, the deadline was short, the quality control was high and it was a challenge - but one we were ready to take on. Our client counterparts and partners in crime Antony Bluff - Cinesite's Executive Producer and Dušan Strugar - Cinesite's VFX Supervisor, were there to guide us through the process.

 

 

With this project, we have shown that we are ready to produce seamless work of the same caliber as some of the largest studios in the world. The biggest THANK YOU Crater owes is to its crew - the 40 hard-working, talented, and skillful, but above all - enduring men and women who worked on the project.
